Scoring

Bogey

A hole completed in one stroke more than par.

A bogey is one stroke over the par of a hole. It is a description of the score, not a penalty by itself. A penalty stroke, when one applies, is included in the number you record.

Five strokes on a par-4 is a bogey whether they were all shots or included an applicable penalty.

Double and triple bogey

Two over par is a double bogey; three over is a triple bogey. On a par-4, those are six and seven strokes. The actual number matters when you add up a stroke-play round.

A round can contain both birdies and bogeys

One birdie and one bogey cancel out relative to par. If every other hole is par, the total is level par. In match play, each hole is judged against the opponent’s score, so a bogey can still win a hole.
