Handicap Index
A measure of demonstrated playing ability used by the World Handicap System.
A Handicap Index expresses demonstrated ability in a form that can travel between courses. It is not simply the number of strokes you usually take over par, and it is not the same as the handicap used for every round.

Your Index can stay the same while your Course Handicap changes when you select a different set of tees.
Before a handicap round
Choose the correct tees and rating category. Use the current Course Rating, Slope Rating and par with your Index. The club or handicap service can then apply the allowance for the chosen competition format.
Starting without an Index
A course’s visitor policy decides whether it requires a handicap for access. Check the course rules rather than assuming every public round needs an official Index. Your national association or affiliated club explains how to establish one and submit acceptable scores.
